John Rodgers - Cobban Branch of Family Tree |
georgina 1895 - 1918
Born February 27 1895 at 5 Market Street Huntly Scotland Georgina was married to a F. H. O'Dell before dying at the age 23 on January 12 1918.
On November 20, 1911, Georgina gave birth to Norman Adrian Cobban. It is believed the father was a Mr. Duff who is said to have left for America. Georgina is known to have travelled to New York where she stayed with her Aunt Bella Mitchell. While in America she met Frank O'Dell and married him on October 5th 1916 in Liverpool England.
The location of Norman's birth is listed as Adrian Cottage, 5 Market Street Huntly. |
Georgina’s story is complex one that raises many questions. From documentation we see she travelled to different corners of the world.
After giving birth to Norman in 1911, Georgina immigrates to the United States, on September 5 1913, possibly ‘following’ Norman’s father Mr. Duff.
It is assumed while in New York she meets Frank Huron O’Dell, marrying him on October 5 1916 in Liverpool England on route to Rangoon Burma India. Frank is 26 years her senior. Frank lists his occupation as an oil well driller.
The story again picks up with Georgina applying for an emergency passport on October 9, within a year of arriving in Rangoon Burma India. The reason for the emergency travel was on the grounds of visiting parents and health. Georgina also applies for Registration of Naturalised Citizenship to the United Stated, with it being endorsed on 22 December 1917.
The documents that illustrate her movements make no mention of her son. Norman remained in Huntly eventually being raised by Georgina’s younger sister Elizabeth.
Georgina’s life ends shortly after, - dying in Huntly Scotland on January 12 1918. It appears Georgina took her own life.

Georgina's Death Certificate listed the wrong marriage name and was amended through the Register of Corrected Entries. The Corrected entry also gave a greater insight into Georgina's death. Both certificates list Georgina's death as suicide, through the self administering of corrosive sublimate poisoning, but the added information hints at Georgina suffering from a mental illness which led to her death. |
Thank you to Marlene Cobban (Granddaughter of Georgina Cobban) for the photo of Georgina at the top of the page and to Belinda Taylor for the emergency Passport photos and information.
